SC refers Jallikattu matter to Constitution Bench
The Supreme Court has referred the Jallikattu matter to the Constitution Bench. While framing five questions, the SC on Friday referred the matter to the Constitution Bench which will now go into the larger implications of the matter and also the validity of the law.
The court had in December indicated that it may refer the matter to a Constitution Bench. The court had however refused to stay the sport which is played in Tamil Nadu as part of the Pongal harvest festival.
The SC had banned Jallikattu in 2014 following petitions from Animal Rights activists who had said that it amounted to extreme cruelty towards animals.
The state of Tamil Nadu had however enacted a law to bypass the verdict of the Supreme Court following massive protests that erupted in the state. The law was challenged in the Supreme Court and will now be decided by a Constitution Bench.
