SC raps Bihar government over Muzaffarpur shelter home rape
New Delhi, Aug 7: The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up the Bihar government over the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case, asking "who is giving money to the shelter home in the state?"
"Girls are raped left, right and centre," said the court, while hearing the case involving the Muzaffarpur shelter home in which over 30 girls were raped.
The SC also asked why the credential of the institution running running it weren't checked before it was given state funds.
"Who is giving money to the shelter home in the state?" the Supreme Court asked.
The issue of sexual exploitation was first highlighted in a social audit report submitted by Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, to the state's Social Welfare Department in April.
An FIR was lodged on May 31 against 11 persons, including Brajesh Thakur, the owner of the NGO 'Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti' which ran the shelter home for destitute girls funded by the government.
Ten out of the 11 accused, including Thakur, were arrested on June 3.
The government on July 26 recommended a CBI inquiry into the matter.
