Saradha scam: Mithun Chakraborty returns Rs 1.19 crore to ED
Kolkata, June 16: Mithun Chakraborty, actor and politician has returned Rs 1.19 crore that was paid to him by the Saradha group for hosting a political chat show.
Mithun, TMC MP in the Rajya Sabha, who had been questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Saradha scam has assured that he would return the money.
Mithun today returned the sum to the ED which had given him a clean chit last month. This was a gesture that was suggested by Mithun himself when he was questioned by the ED last month.
Why Mithun returned the money?
ED officials say that Mithun wanted to return the money as he felt it could be used to pay off several depositors who have been cheated as a result of the Saradha scam.
Mithun had been paid by the Saradha group a sum of Rs 1.19 crore for hosting a political chat show on the Channel 10. Mithun who was called in for questioning by the ED last month had submitted CDs and other relevant material.
He had told the ED that he had no intention of cheating anyone. This was a chat show that I was roped in for he said while also showing proof of the payment made to him.
I will pay the money back:
I will give back all that money that I earned so that it could be used to pay off those depositors who have lost their hard earned money due to this scam, Mithun had told the ED.
I never had any bad intention and if I did I would have quietly parked away the money elsewhere. But the money is right here and I would like it to be used to pay off the depositors Mithun also told the ED.
The ED was convinced with what Mithun had told them. He has assured of all help in the probe. The ED also examined all the material and other relevant documents that he had provided them with following which he was given a clean chit.
