Trudeau is accompanied by his wife Sophie Gregoire, his three children - Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien - and Indian-Candian members of his Cabinet on the trip.

"A beautiful place of peace, humility and truth, that is as needed today as it ever was," Justin Trudeau wrote in visitors book on his arrival to Sabarmati Ashram.

Trudeau also visited the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar.

Later in the day, he will lead a discussion at the Indian Institute of Management- Ahmedabad on "Education and Investment Opportunities" with students.

During his week-long visit with a packed schedule, Justin Trudeau is also taking time out for a visit to Delhi's Jama Masjid and a cricket ground.

Trudeau, 46, is one of the youngest and more popular heads of states in the world. He will hold interactions with business leaders, students, young entrepreneurs as well as some members of the Indian film industry.

He will also travel to the Golden Temple in Amritsar amid India's concerns over Sikh radicalism in Canada. Sikhs account for less than 1.5 percent of Canada's population.

The Canadian PM is expected to hold comprehensive talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on February 23, with a special focus on economic ties, trade and opportunities for creating jobs.

In 2015, PM Modi was hosted by Trudeau in Canada soon after the latter was elected as Canada's prime minister. This is Trudeau's first visit to India in the capacity of Canada's PM.
