Rs 500- Here is where you can use the note after midnight

While the Rs 1,000 note cannot be used at these utilities the following services below would however continue to take the Rs 500 note.

New Delhi, Nov 25 The government in a sudden move today decided that over the counter exchange of Rs 500 and 1,000 notes will be stopped effective midnight.

The government said there would be no exchange of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes after midnight of November 24. However it has extended the use of old 500 notes at petrol pumps, government hospitals and other public utilities till December 15.

While the Rs 1,000 note cannot be used at these utilities the following services below would however continue to take the Rs 500 note.

Here is where you can use the Rs 500 note:

  1. Payment at toll plazas and petrol pumps.
  2. Payment of school fees up to Rs 2,000 per student in central government, state government, municipality and local body schools.
  3. Payment of fees in central or state government colleges.
  4. Payments towards pre-paid mobile top-up to a limit of Rs 500 per top-up.
  5. Purchases at consumer cooperative stores operated under authorisation of central or state governments with identity proof (Safal, Mother Dairy) up to Rs 5,000 at a time.
  6. Purchases at milk booths under central or state governments.
  7. Payment of current and arrear dues to utilities will be limited to only water and electricity.
  8. Payments in government hospitals for medical treatment.
  9. Use in all pharmacies for buying medicines with doctor's prescription.
  10. At railway ticketing counters, bus ticket counters of government or public sector undertakings and airline counters at airports for purchase of tickets.
  11. Payments at crematoria and burial grounds.
  12. Use at international airports for arriving and departing passengers up to Rs. 5,000.
  13. Purchase of LPG gas cylinders.
  14. Payments towards on-board catering during travel by rail.
  15. Purchase of tickets for suburban and metro rail travel.
  16. Purchase of entry tickets monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  17. Payments towards fees, charges, taxes or penalties, payable to central or state governments including municipal and local bodies.
  18. Payments towards utility charges including water and electricity, but no advance payments.
  19. Payments towards court fees.
  20. Payments towards purchase of seeds from designated state-run outlets.
