Rome: Mamata Banerjee to attend Mother Teresa's canonization in September
Kolkata, May 23: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be in Rome this September to attend the canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa where she will be bestowd sainthood.
Banerjee said on Twitter, "I have accepted Sister Prema's invitation to be present at the canonization of blessed Mother Teresa in Rome on September 4."
In March, Pope Francis announced her canonization after the church recognised two miracles she was considered to have carried out after her death in 1997. The founder of Missionaries of Charity, she served the poor for 45 years in Kolkata.
The missionaries of charity is now led by its Superior General German-born Sister Mary Prema.
Banerjee will be accompanied by Sister Prema and Archbishop D'Souza to Rome. Mother was beatified by then Pope John Paul II in a fast-tracked process in 2003.
