Retired bank employees make their comebacks to help colleagues fight demonetisation workload

New Delhi, Nov 23: In the last two weeks, fatigue has set in among the bank employees across the country.

In the wake of the announcement of demonetisation, bank employees have been overloaded with work, as customers make a beeline to withdraw and exchange money.

On November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes to fight against black money, counterfeit currencies and terror funding.

Since then country is facing cash crunch, as bank employees deal with heavy rush of customers.

Reports say 11 bank employees have died due to work-related stress post demonetisation.

"We are working 14-16 hours a day to deal with heavy workload. Moreover, we have to constantly interact and pacify the hassled customers," said a senior official of SBI on condition of anonymity.

The official added several banks across the country are facing manpower crunch.

To deal with the crisis, several retired bank employees have joined the workforce to help their harassed colleagues.

"In the coming days, banks are hoping that more retired employees help them to deal with the work pressure," said another official of a private bank.
