Report finds how did Tamil Nadu MLA's spend their money in the previous elections

Bengaluru, Mar 17: Money flows in all quarters during an election. With the assembly elections to various states coming up, it would be interesting to take a look at the spending pattern.

This report would focus on how the MLAs in Tamil Nadu had spent during the 2011 elections which was won by the AIDMK.

This is how TN MLA spend money

This year around it would be a hard fought battle and there could be a slight increasing in the spending by the MLAs and other candidates who are all geared up to face the polls.

The average spending in the year 2011 by the MLAs in Tamil Nadu was Rs7.12 lakh according to a detailed report by the Association for Democratic Reforms.

This is how TN MLA spent money

Spending pattern:

Based on the election expense declarations of 234 elected MLAs of Tamil Nadu to the ECI, the average amount of money spent by them in the elections is only about 7.12 lakhs, which is about 45% of the expense limit (16 lakhs).

The average election expense declared by MLAs party wise for AIADMK's 150 MLAs was Rs 6,96,316, for DMDK 's 29 MLAs was Rs 7,23,068, for DMK's 23 MLAs was Rs 7,23,421, for CPI(M)'s 10 MLAs was Rs 6,26,022. INC's 5 MLAs showed the highest average expenditure of Rs. 9,15,187 amongst main parties.

Only 4 MLAs have declared that they have spent more than 90% of the amount (i.e. over 14 lakhs).

A total of 161 MLAs have declared election expenses less than Rs 8 Lacs.

The maximum expense of Rs 15,73,700 has been declared by K.T Pachaimal of AIADMK, from Kanniyakumari Constituency followed by 15,35,993 by Dr. K. Krishnasamy of Puthiya Thamilgam, from Ottapidaram constituency and 15,04,490 by Anitha R. Radhakrishnan of Tiruchendur constituency .

The minimum expense of 75,595 has been declared by A. Soundararajan of CPI(M) from Perambur constituency. He is followed by S. Ramachandran of DMDK from Alandur with election expenses of about 2 lakhs and T. Indira Gandhi of AIADMK from Thuraiyur with expenses of 2.5 lakhs.

Expense on Public Meetings and Processions:

Out of all the 234 MLAs analyzed, 58 (i.e 25%) have not shown ANY money spent on public meetings, processions etc. 77 MLAs (i.e 33%) have shown less than Rs 10,000 expense on public meetings etc in their abstract statements.

Expense on Campaigning through electronic/print media: 58 MLAs have declared that they have not spent ANY amount on campaigning through electronic/print media.

Expense on Campaign Workers: 56 (i.e. 24%) MLAs have declared that they have not spent ANY amount on Campaign workers. 77 MLAs (i.e. 33%) have spent less than Rs. 10 thousand on this.

Expense on Vehicles used: 5 MLAs have declared that they have not spent ANY amount on vehicles used during campaigning. 43 MLAs (18%) have declared expenses of less than Rs 1 Lacs.

Expense on Campaign Materials and Erection of gates, arches etc.: 7 MLAs have declared that they have NOT spent any money on campaign materials. 20 MLAs (9%) have declared expenses of less than Rs. 10,000 only.

K T Pachaimal of AIADMK has declared the highest expenses of Rs. 15,73,700 followed by Dr.K.Krishnasamy of Puthiya Thamilagam.

MLAs who declared no expenses on Public Meetings, Processions:

There were a total of 58 MLAs who have declared NO expenses on Public meeting, and 75 MLAs who have shown expenses on Public Meetings etc as less than Rs. 10,000.

The following table lists 5 MLAs (randomly from 56) who have declared that they have spent absolutely NO money on Public Processions etc.

There were a total of 58 MLAs who have declared NO expenses on media, and 76 MLAs who have shown expenses on media as less than Rs. 10,000.

The following table lists 5 MLAs (randomly from 58) who have spent absolutely NO money on electronic/print media (including cable network) etc as declared in their expense statement filed with the Election Commission.
