Reliance Jio's free offer will continue: TDSAT refuses a stay
The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal has refused to stay Reliance Jio's free offer. TDSAT has asked the TRAI to re-examine the January 31 letter that allowed Jio to continue with its free promotional offer.
The TDSAT had reserved its order on March 10 seeking a stay on the free promotional offer. The plea was filed by Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular who sought a directive from the tribunal to Reliance Jio to stop its promotional offer with free voice and data services with immediate effect.
On January 31 2017 the TRAI had said that Reliance Jio's free voice calling and data plan were not in violation of the regulatory guidelines on promotional offers. The TRAI had said that the 'Happy New Year Offer' launched by Reliance Jio on December 4, 2016 was distinct from its previous Jio Welcome Offer and could not be treated as an extension of the promotional offer as the benefits under both were different.
