Gurmehar's father, Captain Mandeep Singh, also died during the Kargil war. Currently, the whole nation is debating the issue of violence in Ramjas College in DU last week, after ABVP members allegedly attacked students of left-wing organisations when they went to attend a seminar in the college campus.
In the same ruckus, several teachers and journalists were also injured. The ABVP members staged a protest in the Ramjas College as they were opposing the invitation given to Umar Khalid to speak in the seminar. Umar, a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University, was arrested last year on charges of sedition. Currently, he is out on bail.
After the violent incident, Gurmehar had posted a profile picture on Facebook of her holding a placard in which said she was not afraid of ABVP and that she was not alone.
Since then a group of people have been trolling the young woman. In fact, many threatened her of dire consequences, including rape threats. Speaking about the threats received on social media, Gurmehar said that it was scary. "But nobody can stop me from speaking my mind." She also lodged a police complaint against the threats.
