Rally for Rivers: An initiative to save India's lifeline

The initiative comes at a time rivers of the country going dry and many cities are facing water shortage problems.

In an effort to rejuvenate rivers in the country, spiritual guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev has launched a 'Rally for Rivers' initiative. The initiative was flagged off in Coimbatore in presence of eminent people like Union environment, forest and climate change minister Harsh Vardhan Singh, cricketers Virender Sehwag, Mithali Raj and car racer Narain Karthikeyan.

The initiative, launched by Isha Foundation, comes at a time rivers of the country going dry and many cities are facing water shortage problems.

The rally will culminate in New Delhi on October 2 after covering 16 states and 7,000 km.

Harsh Vardhan termed the rally as a 'historic' event and expressed sadness at the condition of rivers condition of Indian rivers.

Virender Sehwag recalled the glory of rivers of India in the past.

"Four decades ago, the rivers in my native village were flowing in full capacity and they were a sight to watch. I want to see that again and that is the reason I support this cause," TOI quoted Sehwag as saying.

Speaking at the event in Madurai, Sadguru said, "Privileged to be in the temple town of Madurai of great traditions and glories of the past".

Mithali Raj extends support to 'Rally for Rivers'

The campaign aims to build adequate awareness and momentum among all sections of the society and the government. Its second step is to facilitate creation of a policy document at the national level and finally, the implementation of the policy.

Focus on reviving rivers is need of the hour

The rally will be covering areas such as Madurai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai, but will not pass through Nagpur. Rather, the rally will pass through Bhopal and Indore before moving towards Lucknow and Jaipur.
