Rajasthan gag bill goes to the cold storage

Amidst the criticism and some legal action, Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje put an ordinance that protects judges and public servants into the cold storage. The controversial draft which was tabled in the Rajasthan Assembly was sent to a select committee of the House.

The select committee is expected to submit its report on the Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill, 2017, by the budget session of the assembly, normally held in February, home minister Gulab Chand Kataria said.

Kataria told reporters that the ordinance will remain valid for 42 days from October 23. "The ordinance has not been withdrawn. It will lapse automatically on the 43rd day," he said.

On Sunday Raje called on her four senior most ministers to discuss the ordinance which has been termed as draconian and ill fated. Two PILs and a writ petition were filed in the Rajasthan High Court against the ordinance. The Assembly too witnessed an uproar over the ordinance which was sought to be passed on Monday. Raje also held meetings with senior bureaucrats late on Monday evening to discuss the ordinance.
