Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembers sacrifices of armed forces on Vijay Diwas
New Delhi, Dec 16: On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday remembered those who fought courageously in the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
"On Vijay Diwas, we remember sacrifices and valour of our Armed Forces who fought courageously in 1971. We are extremely proud of them," tweeted PM Modi.
Earlier, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with the Army Chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag, Navy Chief R K Dhowan and Air Force Chief Arup Raha paid tribute at the 'Amar Jawan Jyoti'.
16th December is being celebrated as 'Victory Day' in Bangladesh and 'Vijay Diwas' in India. On this day, the eastern commander of the Pakistan Army, Lt. Gen. Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, had surrendered to the allied forces after their defeat in a war in Dhaka. The allied forces were consisting of the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini.
The victory of allied forces resulted in creation of Bangladesh.
