Prakash Javadekar to visit Bellandur lake today
Indian Army jawans joined fire fighters to extinguish the fire after over seven hours.
Union minister for Human Resources Development minister Prakash Javadekar and MLA Sri Aravinda Limbavali will visit Bellandur lake at 5 p.m on Saturday. The lake, which is known for toxic froth, was once again on fire on Friday evening.
Indian Army jawans joined firefighters to extinguish the fire after over seven hours.
According to sources, the fire broke out on the lake, in the vicinity of the Army area around noon and the alert troops immediately swung into action to prevent it's spread into Army and adjoining civil areas. The fire was under control at 8 pm. No loss of life or property has been reported.
The Bellandur lake had caught fire in May 2015 and August 2016, also. In 2015, the lake had turned into a frothy, foam-filled water body due to the high concentration of pollutants in the water. Foam from the lake had spilt onto the roads and other areas surrounding the lake. The Varthur lake also had caught fire in May 2017 when some garbage was set ablaze.
