Darjeeling: Police have started probing Abhinandan Saha's role in the baffling murder of his wife and daughter in Fulbari in North Bengal.

Saha being escorted out of the forensic lab on Monday

The businessman's wife and daughter were ruthlessly murdered on August 3 in Fulbari in the Jalpaiguri district. Saha seems to be one of the prime suspects in this case.

Ratan Saha, the elder brother of Late Rita Saha, wife of Abhinandan Saha had lodged an FIR against Abhinanadan at the New Japaiguri police station on Saturday. Ratan Saha alleged that in the past his sister had been mentally and physically tortured by her husband Abhinandan on multiple occasions.

The twin murders had occured at Patkelgunj under the Phulbari Gram Panchayat 1 in the Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal. According to police sources Abhinandan Saha, a businessman had closed his grocery shop and gone up to his residence at around midnight on Wednesday.

At around 1:20 am Saha's neighbours heard him scream for help. They came out to inquire as to what was wrong. Soon a large crowd had gathered outside Saha's house.

Neighbours stated that they saw Saha standing on the balcony shouting for help. He claimed that a group had entered his house and murdered his family members. They had escaped after committing the heinous act.

Saha even claimed that he had seized a chopper from the assailants but could not stop their escape. The neighbours then urged him to come down.

Meanwhile the police were also called in.

Saha then climbed down from the balcony onto the boundary wall and then to the ground floor. He held a chopper in his hand. His head, face and legs bore marks of injury.

Police had to force open the main door of the house to enter. In the bedroom they found the dead bodies of Rita Saha (30) and her daughter Payel (10 years) laying in a pool of blood on the floor. In the adjacent room her 7 year old son was found. He was in a state of shock and trauma.

Saha has been admitted at a private nursing home in Siliguri, 10km from Phulbari. Police on Monday took Saha to the forensic department of the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on a stretcher. Forensic tests were conducted on him along with the collection of finger print samples.

Recently a forensic team had visited Saha's house and had collected samples from the site of the murder. Along with this the four member forensic team led by Professor Prabir Kumar Deb, Head of the Department is trying to ascertain whether the injury on Saha's person was caused by other or self inflicted. The forensic report is expected in three to four days.

After the forensic examination Abhinandan was taken back to the private nursing home where he is undergoing treatment. Police also interrogated him. Police sources claim that there is disparity in his statements leading arousing further suspicion. There are chances of Abhinandan's arrest in the near future.

On the day of the murder Saha had claimed that the assailants were there with the motive of robbery. However the assailants had not touched the Rs. 5 lakh cash and gold ornaments that was stashed in the room.

It is also unexplained as to how they had entered the house and the route through which they left after committing the crime. The CCTV footage of the building at the time of the alleged assault does not show any outsiders.

The neighbours had not seen anyone leave the house.
