Gandhinagar, March 8: On the occasion of International Women's Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked women leaders in rural areas to fight against the menace of female foeticide in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

"Female foeticide can't be allowed to take place. Villages with women sarpanches can play a key role and show the way in ending female foeticide," PM Modi said, while speaking at Swacch Shakti 2017 award ceremony to honour women sarpanches.

The PM said in order to bridge the gender gap, girls should be given access to education. "Boys and girls, both must get equal access to education."

"The women we are honouring today have broken so many myths. They have shown how a positive change has begun in rural India. I can see the determination to make a positive difference when I meet these women sarpanches. They want to bring a qualitative change."

The PM gave away Swachh Shakti 2017 awards to women leaders in rural areas at the women sarpanches conclave, reported ANI.

"Today we are honouring sarpanches who have contributed immensely to the movement towards a clean India. In 2019, we will mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He always said India lives in the villages," said PM Modi.

"Gandhi Ji also said cleanliness is more important than political freedom. You can imagine the commitment he had towards cleanliness," he added.
