Pinch of salt: Price of salt soars to Rs 400/Kg in Delhi, Rs 700/Kg in Mumbai

Reports say rumours were circulated on social media and WhatsApp by mischief mongers.

New Delhi, Nov 12: Believe it or not, within hours last evening, salt prices shot up to Rs 400 per kg in Delhi and Rs 700 per kg in Mumbai following rumours about its scarcity.

Several television reports showed how in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, National Capital Region (NCR), Mumbai and Kolkata, people stood in long queues in front of wholesale shops to buy salt.

Taking advantage of the situation, some shopkeepers quickly increased the price of cooking salt.

Generally one kg of salt is priced between Rs 15 to Rs 35.

In order to control the situation, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal refuted the rumours.

"Some people are spreading rumours that there is shortage of salt and sugar, this is false," he said.

Mumbai Police also tweeted, "Please do not believe in any rumours. There is no shortage of salt or any other necessary commodity nor any price hike info."

Delhi Police also issued an advisory on Twitter.

Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan said that there is no shortage and appealed the state governments to take action against the person spreading rumours.
