Karnataka Budget 2017: Your movie now costs Rs 200

Cine-goes may have a lot of reason to smile if they are visiting cinema halls in Karnataka. Chief minister Siddaramaiah while presenting the annual budget proposed to cap pricing of cinema tickets at a maximum of Rs 200. The cap will be applicable to all cinema halls including multiplexes where ticket prices have reached well beyond Rs 500 in the past.

The move comes after much contemplation and opposition by theatre owners. Bengaluru has seen prices of film tickets hit the ceiling, costing up to Rs 700 depending on the language and the stars in the movie. With this cap, a theatre can't charge customers more than Rs 200.

Along with the cap on film tickets, the budget also proposed to set up a film city in Mysuru for the development of the Kannada film industry. The decision comes after a committee headed by Rajendra Singh Babu had recommended that ticket pricing be capped. The announcement on mandatory screening of Kannada films in at least one screen of multiplexes between 1.30 pm and 10 pm was also made.
