"We tried everything. We begged and we prayed. Now we've accepted it. No miracle or blessing is going to save our son. We simply do what we can and leave it to fate. That's it."

It's been eight months. In the life of two-year-old Kritik, it feels like forever. It's the only life he knows; one where he cries all day and night, unable to express his discomfort and pain in any other way. His skin and eyes are dull and his cheeks are hollow. The little child lost his youth-like chubbiness months ago.

It began when Ankur, Kritik's father, noticed that his baby had been crying nonstop for too long. His instincts told him the cries weren't normal. He took Kritik to several hospitals in Ludhiana and Delhi where they were repeatedly turned away with the statement that their child was not suffering from "anything serious".

Finally, Fortis Hospital in Delhi told him that Kritik's heart was unable to pump out enough clean blood to supply his entire body.

The only treatment that can save him now is a heart surgery. But that's not all.
"A healthy 2-year-old is supposed to weigh 10 kg. My Kritik weighs 6 kg. His heart is failing his body, and all we have been able to do so far is watch helplessly."

Doctors say that Kritik is far too underweight to be able to take on such a serious surgery. To be able to qualify for the procedure, Ankur needs to provide his child with sufficient nutrition and medication to help him gain a healthy amount of weight. Coupled with the heart surgery, this will cost him Rs 5 lakh.

Ankur earns a living by installing and repairing gas cylinders in Jalandhar, Punjab. His income is far from stable, but he is nowhere close to giving up. He has spent a fortune towards the tests that diagnosed Kritik already, with help from family and friends, though they are not much better off than him.
