Kolkata, June 19: The prime accused in the nun rape case has confirmed to the West Bengal Criminal Investigating Department or the CID that the incident was not a hate crime. I was drunk and drugged as a result of which I assaulted the nun who tried to stop me from robbing the convent, the alleged mastermind of the attack, Nazrul Islam has told the investigation agency.

Nazrul Islam was arrested yesterday by the CID, West Bengal from the Platform Number 5 of the Sealdah railway station in Kolkata. He is the sixth person to be arrested in the case and the CID is still on the look out for two more accused.

'Nun's rape was not a hate crime'

Not a hate crime:

When the nun in convent was raped it was stated by a section of the media that this was a result of a hate crime against Christians. However the investigation of the accused including Nazrul state that they had no personal enmity with anyone and the act occurred on the spur of the moment.

I have no reason why I assaulted the nun, Nazrul told the CID. Probably because I was drug and drunk, he also informed the CID which is all set to file a chargesheet in the case once they get more details on the forensics.

The CID also asked Nazrul if this entire episode was planned to target a particular community. However he like the rest of the accused told his interrogators that this act was planned in a bid to rob the convent. However the nun tried to stop us, Nazrul also said.

He further added that when the nun tried to stop them, he was angered and assaulted her. The CID is now corroborating his statements with the one given by the others. The CID has so far found that the statements of all the accused are consistent and each one of them have given the same version to the incident.

Nazrul was trying to slip out:

The CID has learnt that Nazrul was trying to slip out of India. He was at Bongaon after the incident. He took a train to Sealdah on Tuesday night and may have been attempting to slip out after meeting someone, the CID suspects.

However his mobile phones were tracked and there were sufficient inputs from the West Bengal Intelligence Bureau which helped track down Nazrul at the railway platform.

The CID says that they are awaiting some more details before they could file the chargesheet in the case. There are some forensic reports that they would await before they could finalise the chargesheet. In addition to this efforts are on to nab the two other accused in the case.

Close to nabbing two more accused:

With the arrest of Nazrul the number of accused in the custody of the CID went up to six. CID officials say that in all there were 8 persons involved in the incident. The other two persons who are still at large are Bombay Salim and Tuhin. The CID believes that these two persons are very much in India and have not slipped into Bangladesh.
