NRC: SC seeks report on ramifications if claimants file additional docs changing their legacy


New Delhi, Aug 28: The Supreme Court has sought a report from the NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela about why those claiming inclusion be permitted to give fresh documents that could change their earlier claimed family tree.

The court also said that it would like to conduct a sample re-verification of 10 per cent of the NRC data, district wise by an independent team to satisfy itself that no errors have crept into the draft NRC.

The court asked Hajela to submit the documents and its ramifications as well as the time taken to complete sample revivification of NRC data. Further the SC also deferred the receipt of claims and objections as it had doubts about the contradictions in procedure for the receipt of claims and objections.

The court further questioned the government's SOP which allowed 40 lakh people excluded in the draft NRC to change heir legacy and submit additional documents, A changge in legacy at the claims stage would involve a change in family tree and fresh verification, the Bench further observed.
