New Delhi, July 24: Now passengers might soon be free from the hassle of having to remove their iPads and laptops from their bags when going through security. Some of the busiest hubs around the world is launching a new technology that could change the way bags are scanned at airports across the country.

The goal is to replace ageing X-ray scanners with new 3-D carry-on bag scanners that use the same technology as CT scans. This will also likely spot explosives older machines could miss.

The machine uses the same technology as CT scanners, providing a 3D image of a bag's contents.

The new scanner, which will be used at the airport's security checkpoint, will allow security forces to rotate a bag's image 360 degrees to show its contents. American Airlines says this should provide a more effective way for agents to inspect bags for explosives and other prohibited items.

The technology was first used in June during a demonstration at Phoenix Sky Harbour International, USA but has also made an appearance in the UK. However, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Indian airport is closely monitoring and plans to test the technology here too, reports TOI.

Since most Indian airports, both PPP metro and those run by Airports Authority of India, have failed to augment capacity in last few years that have seen a number of air travellers grow manifold, serpentine queues at pre-embarkation security checks (PESC) have become a routine sight in peak travel hours.
