Also, the Madras High Court stayed the construction of Vedanta Ltd's Copper Smelter Plant 2 at Tuticorin, 650 km from Chennai. The Madurai bench of the High Court gave this direction on a PIL against the expansion of the company's plant.

Sterlite Copper stated its factory in Tuticorin district is currently non-functional and the company was awaiting approval from the authorities to resume operations at the site. Sterlite said the facility has been shut since March 27 when the company took up annual scheduled maintenance.

However, the firm's application to renew its license to operate the copper smelter facility was rejected by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
