New Delhi, July 1: The monsoon is late, no doubt, but weather experts believe that the month of June this year was the driest since the year 1901. The monsoon deficit for the month is recorded at 43%.

The average rainfall in June was recorded at 92.4 mm, which is considered the third lowest for the month. The scantiest was, however, reported way back in 2009 when rains failed under the shadow of an El Nino occurance.

However, we do not have to wait for relief too long as there is a considerable low pressure over Bay of Bengal.

"Conditions are becoming favourable for monsoon's further advance into more parts of Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana during the next three-four days," said BP Yadav, head of IMD's National Weather Forecasting Centre in New Delhi.

Citing the reasons behind the low monsoon lead, P Sivananda Pai, the lead monsoon forcaster at Pune's India Meteorological Department said,"First, heating of the northern plains, an important factor that draws monsoon winds inland, began only in the first week of June. Then, there have hardly been any low pressure systems forming in the Bay of Bengal."
