Those media outlets reporting fake or incorrect news are likely to be denied government advertisements. The government is set to amend Clause 25 of the New Print Media Advertisement Policy, 2016.

No govt advertisements for those reporting fake news

The clause which deals with the issue of suspension and recovery will be amended to stop the release of DAVP ( Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity) advertisements to those outlets which indulge in unethical reporting.

While there is no definition for fake news or bad intent, the DAVP will take the help of the Press Council of India and Press Information Bureau to weed out such news. Once amended the clause would include provisions to take action against fake news and also news published out of bad intent.

The ban on releasing official advertisements to those reporting fake news would be for a specific period of time and would also depend on the seriousness of misreporting.
