Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant gets extension

Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant was on Monday given an extension till June 30, 2019. Kant, a 1980 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog on February 17, 2016 for a two-year term.

His extension order was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Monday evening.

Before he became Secretary in the ministry of DIPP in the Ministry of Commerce, he was CEO of ambitious industrial project Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), which is being funded by Japan, said reports.

Kant was a key driver of the "Make in India", Startup India, "Incredible India" and "God's Own Country" initiatives that positioned India and Kerala as a leading manufacturing and tourism destinations. These campaigns won several international awards.

These campaigns involved many activities, including infrastructure development, product enhancement, private-public partnership and positioning and branding. Kerala thereafter became India's leading tourism destination.

He was also the National Project Director of the Rural Tourism Project of UNDP which created a paradigm shift in spreading tourism to Indian villages that had skills in handicrafts, handlooms and culture.
