The mosque that made his career became the mosque that ended his career too. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court restored the charges against Bharatiya Janata Party patriarch L K Advani in the Babri Masjid case. This effectively would mean his name would figure much lower in the Presidential race. The Presidential elections are slated for July as the term of Pranab Mukherjee comes to an end.

L K Advani

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, when asked if the SC verdict had dented the chances of Advani as President of India, said that the question was hypothetical. One would, however, have to bear in mind that Advani is not guilty as the trial is still pending. One would know only after the completion of the trial whether he would be held guilty or not.

With regard to Advani's name for post of President, the BJP or the NDA have not announced it publicly. There was just talk that he is being considered. Some reports also suggested it would be Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'guru dakshina,' to Advani.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee too had said that if the BJP does not propose his name for President of India then her party was willing to do so as a consensus candidate. The question now is will the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP propose his name. At this juncture, it appears unlikely considering the Supreme Court's verdict. There is, however, no bar in proposing his name considering he has not been held guilty by any court as yet.
