Nepal quake: Kerala bids farewell to 2 young doctors

Kasaragod/Kannur, Apr 30: Kerala on Wednesday paid tributes to the two young doctors who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake in Nepal, as their remains were brought to the state from Benguluru this morning.

The bodies of Dr Deepak Thomas from Kannur and Dr A S Irshad from Kasaragod were brought to New Delhi last night from Kathmandu and airlifted to Bengaluru shortly later from where they were taken to their respective homes by road this morning. [Nepal Earthquake 2015: Full Coverage]

Thousands of local people, their friends and well wishers thronged the homes of the two youngsters to pay homage. Heart rending scenes were witnessed as 28-year-old Irshad's body was brought in an ambulance to his home at Anabagilu in Kasaragod town at around 10 am this morning.

Parents, siblings, and Dr Lulu Fathima, who was engaged to Dr Irshad, paid their last respects before the body was buried at the Nellikunnu Jumma Masjid.

Twenty-seven-year-old Dr Deepak Thomas's last rites were held at the Kanichara St George church in Kannur where his friends, relatives and local people gathered in large numbers.

The two along with another friend Dr Abin Suri had gone to Nepal on a vacation before pursuing their higher studies in May.

Suri was rescued with serious injuries and has been admitted to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences trauma care centre.

Suri, who enquired about his friends soon after reaching Delhi, has not yet been informed about their death, his relatives said.

The three doctors, working at National Health Rural Mission programme at Mananthavady in Waynad district, had left for Kathmandu for an excursion last week from Kozhikode before joining for their PG course in May.

They had passed out from Kozhikode Medical College last year.
