Guwahati, August 7: The people of the Northeast are still fighting to bring back normalcy in their lives after a series of flood and landslide incidents wreaked havoc across the region since June.

Amid the tragedy, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued fresh warning of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in the Northeast in the next four days.

The weather bulletin of the IMD said, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim till August 10."

Thus the next few days are critical for the people in the entire Northeast. As per the IMD bulletin, the region will receive heavy and very heavy rainfall of around 64.5-115.5mm and 115.6-204.4mm in 24 hours respectively.

Taking into consideration the weather forecast, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) alerted the administration in Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Karimganj, Dhubri, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts to take preventive steps to reduce loss of lives and properties.

Already rain battered a couple of places in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya resulting in increase in water level of several rivers in these states on Sunday.

"On Sunday evening, 4,866 people in 18 villages in Lakhimpur, Golaghat and Jorhat districts in Assam have been affected by floods and 300 people have taken shelter in four relief camps in Lakhimpur and Golaghat districts," stated the daily flood bulletin of the ASDMA.

This year, already 83 people died in Assam due to floods. More than 25 lakh people in around 4,000 villages have been affected by floods. Due to the ongoing floods, around 4.9 lakh hectares of cropland have been damaged in the state. Because of landslides at least 17 people have died in Arunachal Pradesh and 10 in Meghalaya.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Guwahati, Assam, announced Rs 2,000 crore package for the Northeast region to fight floods and landslides.
