Navy sailors sentenced to imprisonment for raping minor in Maharashtra

A military court in Maharashtra sentenced two Navy sailors to rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor in 2015. The sailors have been sentenced to 15 years and 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor who hadn't even completed 14 years of age.

Pawan alias Om Pal, Prithvi Chauhan and Rakesh Singh, all sailors in the Navy were arrested in 2015 by the Cuffe Parade police after an officer's family alleged that they had raped their minor daughter. Cases were registered against the accused under POCSO and IPC. The sailors who were permanent employees of the Navy were tried by a Military court. The investigations revealed that Rakesh, one of the sailors had managed to obtain the number of the girl and developed a friendship.

The trio, along with a civilian identified as Jeetendra, is accused of them raping the girl over a period of four months. The minor is said to have kept mum over the abuse after Rakesh threatened her of handing over their phone conversation records to her parents.

The incident came to light on July 18, 2015, when the girl's parents saw one of the accused exit their residence. The girl told her parents of the ordeal after they counselled her. Pawan had been with the Indian Navy for the last 14 years.
