New Delhi, Jan 17: Following the tradition of honouring brave children from across the country during the Republic day celebrations, India on Tuesday announced the names of 16 children to be honoured with the National Bravery award.

Out of the 16 courageous and determined children, four will be honoured posthumously. The children have been selected for the award based on different acts of bravery.

India will celebrate the 68th Republic day on January 26. The Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) gives the award to brave children every Republic Day. The award was instituted in 1952.

The 16 children belong to different states of the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Karnataka, Punjab, Meghalaya, Odisha, Nagaland, Gujarat, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.

The award is broadly classified into five categories, including the Bharat award, Sanjay Chopra award, Geeta Chopra award, Bapu Gaidhani award and the General National Bravery award.

"The members of the ICWW selected the names of children after detailed discussion and careful scrutiny of the cases," stated an official.

Last year, 25 children got the award. The winners of the award get the chance to take part in the Republic Day celebrations in the national capital.
