National Anthem not mandatory in SC- Petitioner ordered to file fresh plea
The petitioner had earlier moved the court seeking a directive to all theatres in the country to compulsorily play the National Anthem before the start of a movie.
New Delhi, Dec 2: A petition has been filed seeking that the singing of the national anthem be made mandatory in the Supreme Court, High Courts and also the lower courts.
The petitioner had earlier moved the court seeking a directive to all theatres in the country to compulsorily play the National Anthem before the start of a movie.
The same petitioner now sought to modify the order. He said that the playing of the National Anthem must be made mandatory at the SC, High Courts and all other lower courts. This would achieve a golden goal, he said in his plea.
The court said that the same could not be mandatory at the courts and bar councils across the country. The National Anthem is not mandatory in the Supreme Court, the Bench observed while stating that there was no proper petition filed in this regard.

The court however as per the advise of the Attorney General of India told the petitioner to file a proper petition in this regard. The SC directed the petitioner to file a proper petition and then approach the Bench.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had ordered that playing of the National Anthem be made mandatory at all cinema halls before the start of a movie.
The court also said that while the National Anthem is playing the National Flag should be displayed on the movie screen. The order also made it mandatory for all persons to stand up while the National Anthem is being played.
