Nandan Nilekani is likely to make a comeback as the chief of Infosys, according to news reports that cited company sources. Clarity on Nilekani's role is likely to emerge in the next 24 hours. Prior to this development, N R Narayana Murthy postponed a conference call with investors scheduled for 6.30 PM IST on Wednesday.

Nandan Nilekani

Business channel CNBC-TV18 quoted company sources to suggest that co-founder Nandan Nilekani may return as the head of Infosys. Following the dramatic events leading to Vishal Sikka's resignation and consequent plunge in the company's shares, Nilekani is likely to return to the helm of affairs.

Narayana Murthy postponing his call with investors to August 29 has only added to the speculation. Neither Narayana Murthy nor Nandan Nilekani has, however, confirmed nor rejected the reports. The company was considering old guards soon after Sikka's resignation left a void. Nilekani's name was, supposedly, pitched and back by investors. During a media interaction after Sikka's resignation, the board had hinted that the next CEO could be someone from within.

Top fund managers and domestic institutional investors are said to have proposed Nilekani's name since he enjoys the confidence of customers, stakeholders and employees. The letter by the investors, according to the report, believes that his return to the board would instil credibility and resolve contentious issues.

Nandan Nilekani left Infosys in 2009 to become the Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). After trying his hands at politics, Nilekani has now turned into a start-up investor.
