Mystery explosions off Bengal coast trigger panic among tourists
Mystery explosions off the West Bengal coast caused widespread panic among the residents and beach tourists of Digha and Mandarmani on Saturday. Digha is the most popular sea resort in West Bengal.
Hotels close to the coast are said to have developed cracks on walls and glass panes shattered from the impact.
Police who rushed to the spot said , they found no material on land and suspecting the explosion to be from a nearby place, boosting speculation.
Soon after the explosion speculation were rife that a missile test at Chandipur, 50 km from Digha. There were speculations whether could have accidentally landed close to the Bengal coastline.
As a precaution, the local administration prohibited the residents and tourists to go into the waters.
"The first sound was heard around 11.10 am. It was followed by another one and we felt a quake too. None had any ides what happened and tourists rushed out of their rooms and went to the roads," said Girish Raut, a hotel owner, reports HT.
