For the second time in two days, heavy pre-monsoon rains, accompanied by thunder and lightning, lashed Mumbai on Monday night, hitting flight operations, waterlogging streets and uprooting trees.

Mumbai: Water-logged streets in Malabar Hill area following heavy showers

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Disaster Control Room, in a statement, said that maximum rainfall of 46 mm was recorded in Andheri area followed by Dahisar (43mm), Dharavi (39 mm), Wadala (35mm) and Byculla (33mm).

Rains poured over south Mumbai, eastern and western suburbs and in many areas of adjoining Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri and Palghar districts.

Waterlogging was reported in some parts of the city and suburbs, leading to huge traffic snarls on the two highways and other roads in the city and suburbs.

At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, at least nine incoming flights of different airlines were diverted to other airports like Ahmedabad on account of congestion at Mumbai and inclement weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, has issued a warning stating that thunderstorm, accompanied with gusty winds with lightning, is likely to occur in Thane during next few hours.

Earlier the Indian Meteorological Department had predicted that monsoon is likely to reach Maharashtra and Goa in the next two days. Rain over the western coast, especially in Mumbai, is likely to peak between June 8 and 10, private agency Skymet said.
