Mumbai: Former ATS chief Himanshu Roy kills himself, suicide note recovered

Himanshu Roy, Additional Director General of Police, allegedly committed suicide at his residence on Friday. Roy shot himself at his residence. According to a statement released by Mumbai Police, Himanshu Roy committed suicide as he was suffering from Cancer. The same has been mentioned in the suicide note recovered by the police.

Roy was on medical leave due to his prolonged illness. Himanshu Roy had served as Maharashtra ATS chief. He shot himself at 1:40 PM today at his residence in Mumbai with his service revolver. Himanshu Roy was suffering from Cancer. He was taking steroids.

Mumbai Police PRO Deepak Deoraj told OneIndia that the entire department is in shock. 'He has passed away and the body is at the hospital for the formalities,' Deoraj also informed.

Dr Gautam Bhansali, Consultant Physician, Bombay Hospital, said, "Unfortunatel,y he was brought dead to the hospital. I knew him personally, he had lost lots of weight due to illness and didn't have the same personality as earlier."

Sources say that the top cop who had also headed the Maharashtra ATS was depressed. He was suffering from cancer and was undergoing treatment as a result of which he was depressed. This could have prompted him to take the extreme step, the source also added.

Roy was 1988 batch Maharashtra cadre IPS officer. Roy has solved several sensational cases including the firing on Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar's driver Arif Bael, Journalist J Dey murder case, the double murder case involving Vijay Palande, Laila Khan murder case and the recent murder of law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta.

During 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case, he was responsible for the arrest of Vindu Dara Singh was for alleged links to bookies in this spot-fixing. Vindu Dara Singh was later released on bail on 3 June 2013 by a Mumbai Court.

Roy was the first police officer after Rakesh Maria to be given the Z+ security cover in 2014 because his tenure as crime branch chief was termed as "successful" as several sensational cases were cracked under his supervision.

Roy was awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service and 50th Anniversary Independence medal.

Roy is an alumnus of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
