Mumbai Rains UPDATE: 5 killed in rain fury; 32 flights cancelled, 350 delayed

Mumbai, Sep 06: After heavy downpour on Wednesday, the water are receding now in many parts of Mumbai. At least five persons were killed in different incidents as Mumbai notched record rains in the city and suburbs on Wednesday, which saw the country's commercial capital paralysed for the third time this monsoon, officials said here on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert with a forecast of "heavy to very heavy" rainfall in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas - Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Nashik.

The Santacruz weather station in suburban Mumbai recorded a whopping 242 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am Thursday. At least 1,300 persons living on the banks of the Mithi were shifted by the National Disaster Response Force, disaster management cell of the BMC, fire brigade and the police when the river crossed the danger mark.

Two persons including a seven- year-old boy were washed away in flooded nullahs in Thane and neighboring Palghar district in the last two days, the police said. Laxman Tapisar (62), resident of Naikpada in Bhiwandi tehsil of Thane, was washed away on Tuesday. He was walking home along a bund amid heavy rain when he slipped and fell into nullah around 2.30 pm on Tuesday, said a local police official. He was still missing, said District Disaster Control Officer Anita Jawanjal. Abu Khan (7) was washed away after falling into a nullah near his house in Nallasopara in Palghar district around noon on Wednesday. Search was on for both Tapisar and the boy, local officials said. Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and surrounding areas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier today issued a red alert and predicted very heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad next 24 hours. Out of the 150 weather stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), around 100 recorded over 200 mm rainfall in last 24 hours, the IMD said. The city has received above-average rainfall in September, according to KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, IMD, Mumbai. The situation in Mumbai may worsen with predictions of more rain for the region.
