Moral policing in Kochi, couples thrashed on Women's day
Members of Shiv Sena attacked youngsters at Kochi Marine drive on Wednesday afternoon. Swinging lathis at men and women, Shiv Sena members indulged in moral policing even as the public remained mute spectators. In brazen disregard for the law and little care for the cameras recording them, the uncouth gang unleashed violence targeting even women on a day when the world celebrated women.
Even as cameras were rolling, police at the spot were seen refusing to act. It was only after couples were thrashed that the police intervened and arrested five members of the shiv sena. Incidents of moral policing have been on the rise in Kerala with self-proclaimed protectors of 'culture' assault youngsters. It may be recalled that a victim of moral policing, who was pulled up on Valentines' day for accompanying a female friend, committed suicide in Kerala, unable to bear the embarrassment.
