Modi recalls Quit India Movement, says similar resolve needed to root out corruption
Describing India's independence as a "defining moment" in the World history, Modi called for a similar resolve to root out corruption from the country.
Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the younger generation ought to know about the historic movement which was one of the most important events in India's freedom struggle.
Recalling Mahatma Gandhi famous line 'Karenge ya marenge', Modi said the Quit India Movement marked the rise of a new leadership and the entire nation stood up to support Father of the Nation. He further added by saying, today it is'Karenge Aur Kar Ke Rahenge'.
"Every citizen was part of the movement. It was a now or never battle. Gandhiji, known for passive resistance said: "Do or Die". It surprised many," the Prime Minister said in the Lok Sabha.
Recalling other key events in India's freedom struggle, Modi said August Kranti, the other name of Quit India Movement, was the final battle.

"Our freedom was not only about our country. It was a defining moment in bringing an end to colonialism in other parts of the world too. Similarly, today too, time is ripe for India to take the lead and show others the way," Modi said.
"Poverty, lack of education and malnutrition, these are big challenges we face, need to bring a positive change in this regard," he added.
He said it is not difficult to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi's wishes when the country stays united.

Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan earlier said people had worked very hard during the independence movement, adding that the nation now needs a Bharat jodo andolan (Unite India Movement).
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said that the terrorism has emerged as the biggest threat in recent times.
"Many have tried to challenge our sovereignty but our Army can defend our borders," he said.
Jaitley also spoke on the partition and subsequent conflict in Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism and strengthening of armed forces post the 1962 war.
