Mobile phones to have 'Panic Button' to ensure women safety: Maneka Gandhi

New Delhi, Oct 8: In a move to ensure women safety, the women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi on Friday proposed that mobile phones should have a new feature called inbuilt 'panic button'.

According to reports, Maneka has asked all mobile phone manufacturers to work out the feasibility of developing such a feature.

Maneka made the big announcement when she addressing a 'Student Parliament' on women's issues organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at NDMC Convention Centre in New Delhi.

Maneka was quoted saying as, "The phones will have a panic button that will be linked to the GPS. We are in conversation with phone manufacturers and the proposal is likely to be executed in few months.'

"Pressing the panic button will send an SMS to a set of numbers that will also provide location information", she said.

Maneka also said that her ministry will recruit a special woman police officer in each village.

She also talked about NDA schemes like "beti bachao, beti padhao" and reservation of posts for women in police stations.

She suggested 33 per cent reservation for women in police forces across the country.

Over 300 students from universities across the nation participated in the three-day student parliament session, that kicked off on Thursday, Oct 1.

While first day was dedicated to tribal students at a seminar entitled, 'Tribal Student-Youth Parliament', the remaining two days are for 'Women Student Parliament' and 'North East Student-Youth Leaders Parliament'.

The report on issues resulting from the discussions of the three student parliaments will be handed over to the ministries concerned in the form of a memorandum.
