"If you are living in villages, you would know that lynchings are not new. In villages, lynchings have been happening for a long time. Only difference is that rumours are spreading through Whatsapp now, and in earlier days rumours used to spread by word of mouth," he said.

"A strange person comes to a village, and someone would say he will takes our babies, then people would beat him up. It has happened so many times," he added.

When law enforcement is weak, mob had its own way to enforce law, he said.

"Lynchings used to happen even when there was no police system. It has been happening for a long time," he said.

Sadhguru was answering to a question by the audience at IIMBue 2018 Leadership Conclave. When he was asked about intolerance, Sadhguru said things have been improving and caste barriers becoming thinner, but "Something which has been there for thousands of years cannot become right overnight."

Discrimination on the basis of caste is a reality in rural parts of the country, it is improving now, he added.
