Chandigarh, May 4: Days after it announced contesting in civic polls in Mumbai and Bengaluru, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is now planning to prepare its ground in Punjab, which is going to see state assembly polls in 2017.

Buoyed by its historic performance in Delhi polls, AAP is planning to contest Assembly polls in Punjab, the only state to have given Parliamentarians to the party. AAP had won 4 seats it had contested in Punjab during 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The party now wants to repeat its success in Punjab state assembly polls in 2017.

The party has started cementing its ground in Punjab to challenge ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP combine as well as opposition Congress. The party will be relying heavily over its poster boy and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for a Delhi-like performance in the state.

As per a report published in TOI a senior party member was quoted as saying, "This a potential state for us. The best frontal team that worked on the Delhi election has been sent there to assess the situation and start work on establishment of a proper party structure. This is needed in place as soon as possible before we start the campaign. There is already groundswell support for the party and has to be converted to votes."

In order to cement its position, a team has already started camping in the state and visiting each assembly constituency in Punjab.

"Of the 117 assemblies we have visited 25 so far and hope to finish all by June. We are spending up to a day in each assembly, hold one to one meeting with volunteers and getting their feedback on organization, senior party members and the political situation in the state. There is another team on ground which is mingling with voters and getting their feedback on the party," said Pathak.

Major issues on which the party will be seeking votes in Punjab will be anti-corruption, curbing the menace of drugs and clean politics.

The recent incidence of molestation of 14-year-old girl in a bus, owned by ruling Badal family, will also be raised to highlight the issue of women's safety in the state.
