Minor girl dies after father stabs her

Rupnagar (Punjab), Mar 6: A 16-year-old girl died here after being allegedly stabbed by her father over suspicion that she was having an affair, police said today.

The victim, a student of class XI, was stabbed by her father, Balwinder Singh, when she returned home from school late Friday evening after he suspected her of having a relationship, they said.

She died yesterday while being shifted to a hospital in Chandigarh from Chamkaur Sahib, police said. On Friday, the accused, a resident of Chamkaur Sahib, had questioned the victim over her coming home late and asked her to accompany him to the local theme park.

Balwinder questioned the minor about her friendship with some boys, following which an argument broke out between the two, police said. In a fit of rage, Singh took out a knife and stabbed her several times before fleeing from the scene, they said.

He later reached a police post near the theme park and surrendered. The police rushed to the spot and took the profusely bleeding girl to the civil hospital at Chamkaur Sahib.

The doctors here later referred her to a hospital in Chandigarh, but she succumbed to her injuries, officials said. Police produced the accused in a local court yesterday where he confessed to his crime. He was sent to 14 days judicial remand.
