Minister calls Congress lawmakers 'offsprings of British'

Chandigarh, Mar 19: Angry over derogatory remarks by two BJP ministers on "the Nehru-Gandhi family", the Congress staged a walkout during the ongoing Budget session of the Haryana Assembly.

The Congress also demanded Chief Minister Mahohar Lal Khattar's apology.

Responding to a question, Sports Minister Anil Vij termed the Nehru-Gandhi family as an offspring of the British.

"They have taught people that only the Gandhi-Nehru family has fought in the freedom struggle. However, the country's first war of independence was fought in 1857, before A O Hume founded the Congress in 1885," Anil Vij said.

He also said that Congress leaders are the offspring of the British which is why they did not allow the construction of a war memorial in Ambala in the memory of those who fought the 1857 war.

The controversy kick-started when Radaur MLA Sham Singh Rana asked if the government intended to construct a modern stadium in his constituency. To which, Vij said there were three stadiums in the name of Gandhi family in Barsan, Nagal and Golani villages of the Radaur constituency and the name of the stadia ought to be changed.

Reacting to former Speaker Kuldeep Sharma comments, Vij said that the government will decide on naming the stadia and he was very serious about renaming them.

Supporting BJP minister's comment, leader of the Opposition Abhay Chautala said that the previous Congress government have changed the name of two units of the Panipat Thermal power plant named after former Deputy PM Devi Lal.

Congress MLAs later submitted a memorandum to Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki and staged a dharna.
