Chopper Crash Updates: General Bipin Rawat, his wife laid to rest with full military honours

Chennai, Dec 10: A day after first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and Defence Adviser Brigadier LS Lidder were laid to rest with full state honours, the identification of the four Indian Army Force personnel and two soldiers of the Indian Army killed in the chopper crash in Coonor has been completed

The last rites of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat, who died in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday was performed with full military honours at Brar Square crematorium in Delhi Cantonment.

On Saturday, the ashes of General Bipin Rawat and his wife will be immersed in the Ganga in Haridwar.

The last rites were held this evening at the premises of his residence at Ponnukkara village. The mortal remains were brought to Sulur airbase in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu from New Delhi at around 11 am and taken to Kerala by road.

Varun is a fighter, he will win battle and come out, says father of lone survivor of chopper crash

The health condition of IAF Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor of the helicopter crash that killed Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and 12 others, being treated at Command Hospital in Bengaluru is "fluctuating", but he will win the battle and come out as he is a "fighter", his father said on Saturday. Talking to PTI over phone from Bengaluru, Varun Singh's father Colonel K P Singh (retired), who lives in Bhopal, said, "There is so much of fluctuation that how (my son is) cannot be defined." He said his son's health is being monitored every hour. "In the hourly monitoring, there are rises and falls. You cannot say. Everyone is discussing. We are in the best hands. He is in the best hands, rather," the retired Army officer, who hung up his boots some ten years ago, said.

Mortal remains of IAF officer from Rajasthan killed in helicopter crash reach Jhunjhunu

The mortal remains of Squadron Leader Kuldeep Singh, who was among the 13 including CDS General Bipin Rawat killed in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, reached Jhunjhunu airstrip in an aircraft on Saturday. He was given floral tributes by MP Narendra Kumar, MLA Rita Chaudhary, District Collector U D Khan, SP Pradeep Mohan Sharma and others at the airstrip. His wife and other family members were also present. A decorated truck of the IAF left for his village Ghardana Khurd with the mortal remains. The funeral will be performed later in the day. "Proper arrangements have been made for the funeral in the village," Collector UD Khan said. A large number of people have assembled at his village and on the way from the airstrip to pay tributes to Singh.

Bandhvi, a history graduate from St Stephen's College, Delhi University, said she reached Delhi late last night to be with the family. "I somehow completed my rifle shooting competition in Bhopal. Images of 'phua-phupha' (Gen Rawat and Madhulika Rawat) were flashing in my head. But, my 'phuphaji' (Gen Rawat) had always inspired me to be a fighter," she told PTI. Bandhvi, who will turn 21 on December 18, recalled the time she had spent with him a few months ago at Gen Rawat's official bungalow. "I had returned from Peru after taking part in world shooting championship. And, it was Dussehra time. And, 'phuphaji' (Gen Rawat) took me to the Dusshera festivities as observed by Gorkha Regiment soldiers. And, as I shoot rifle as a sport, he wanted me to get blessings of the Goddess," she recalled. "All of these memoies, I will cherish now," she said. An alumnus of St Edward School, Shimla, and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the 11th Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in December 1978. Recalling, Gen Rawat's personality, Bandhvi said, "He spoke, not much, among us, but through his gestures taught us a lot". Gen. Rawat assumed charge as Chief of Army Staff in December 2016. And, was appointed the first CDS on December 31, 2019.

Singh, born in 1966, along with his daughter, Bandhvi Singh, a national-level shooting player, were present at the official residence of the Chief of Defence Staff in Delhi where mortal remains of Gen Rawat and Madhulika Rawat were kept for people to pay their respects. Their cremation took place took place at Brar Square crematorium in Delhi Cantonment, two days after they were killed with 11 others, all from the armed forces, in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Madhulika Rawat's younger brother recalled the marriage that had taken place 35 years ago. "The year was 1986. And, Gen Rawat then held the rank of a Captain, and was posted in Dehradun. Such fond memories, and now cruel fate has snatched my sister, and my brother-in-law from us," Yash Vardhan Singh said.

Madhulika Rawat's brother reminisces about her marriage with Gen Rawat

As the nation bid the final farewell to armed forces power couple -- Gen Bipin Rawat and Madhulika Rawat -- her brother on Friday emotionally recalled the events that led to their matrimonial alliance 35 years ago. Yash Vardhan Singh, brother-in-law of Gen Rawat, said fate had brought them together and fate took them away both at the same time. "It was actually his father (Laxman Singh Rawat), who was also an army officer, who had sought the hand of my sister for his son (Bipin Rawat). He wrote to my father late Mrigendra Singh and that's how the marriage talks began," he said. Yash Vardhan Singh's ancestral family hails from Sohagpur in Shahdol district in Madhya Pradesh. "Our 'nanaji' lived in Lucknow and that is where my sister was born in 1960s. Incidentally, the address of her place of birth was '25, Ashoka Marg' and she got married in Delhi at '25 Ashoka Road'. Isn't it a pleasant coincidence," he told PTI.

The huge posters, only carrying images of the couple and slogan 'amar rahe' (long live) were hung from poles and trees at a roundabout on Kamraj Marg and other streets in Lutyens' Delhi.

Man arrested in Raj for making indecent remarks against Gen Bipin Rawat

A man was arrested from Rajasthan for allegedly making indecent remarks against Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat who along with 12 others were killed when a Mi17V5 helicopter carrying them crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. “The accused Javed Khan (21), a resident of Nazarbag road in the city, was arrested on Thursday,” SHO Kotwali police station of Tonk, Jitendra Singh said. Khan was arrested for making derogatory remarks against General Bipin Rawat on social media, he said. Four teams were formed to trace the accused, the officer said. The accused was produced in a local court where the magistrate ordered to send him to judicial custody, he added.

Asked about Gen Rawat's connect with the people of Kashmir, the GOC said, "It (his connection) was across the Kashmir Valley. If you see the last 48 hours, the way people have taken out rallies, candlelight vigils and marches, it indicates the connect. The large number of people from Kashmir who have gone to attend the cremation or pay respects to Gen Rawat in Delhi speaks volumes about the connect."

Army, civilians pay homage to Gen Rawat in Kashmir

The Army and civilians paid tributes to Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, who along with his wife and 11 other defence personnel was killed in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, and held prayers for him in different parts of Kashmir on Friday. The main ceremony to pay homage to Gen Rawat was held at the headquarters of the Army's Chinar Corps at Badamibagh here, officials said. General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Chinar Corps Lt Gen D P Pandey led the senior police and civil administration officers and people from various parts of the Valley in paying tributes to Gen Rawat. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ceremony, Lt Gen Pandey said the ceremony was a tribute from Chinar Corps and the people of Kashmir to Gen Rawat and others who died in the crash.

The plaintive strains of the last post broke through the hush, men in uniform clicked their heels and a 17-gun salute rang out as Gen Bipin Rawat and his wife were cremated on Friday evening – the sun setting on a day written into India’s military history and on the life of its most senior military officer. India’s first chief of defence staff (CDS) and his wife Madhulika Rawat were given a send-off with full military honours at the Brar Square crematorium in Delhi Cantonment, two days after they were killed with 11 others, all from the armed forces, in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. As millions watched on television and hundreds packed into Brar Square, the couple’s two daughters Tarini and Kritika conducted the last rites of their parents taken away from them so brutally. On a day of barely held back tears framed by the solemnity of the formal pageantry of a tri-services ceremony, thoughts were also with the families of those whose last rites could not take place because their bodies are at the Army Base Hospital awaiting identification.
