Meteoric rise in income of MPs: IT files report in sealed cover at SC

The report has been filed in a sealed cover as per the directions of the SC. On Monday the CBTD had said that it will probe assets of 7 out of 26 Lok Sabha MPs whose assets had increased in a large number. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the CBDT pointed out the disproportionate assets of MPs and MLAs.

The affidavit further alleged that there was a substantial increase in assets of 26 Lok Sabha MPs, 11 RS MPs and 257 MLAs as reflected in election affidavits. It further said that IT dept inquired and found it prima facie true that 7 of 26 LS MPs had huge increase in assets.

IT dept will further probe assets of 7 of 26 LS MPs who had huge increase in assets, CBDT further stated.

Of the 257 MLAs, 98 found to have substantially increased their assets and are being further probed, the affidavit also stated. Preliminary assessment of another 42 MLAs' assets are being examined, CBDT also told the Supreme Court.

CBDT says it has periodically shared the probe status and result with regard to elected representatives with EC. However, the CBDT is expected to provide to SC in sealed cover on Tuesday names of MPs and MLAs who increased assets hugely.
