Chennai, Nov 3: Chennai is living on the edge as the capital city of Tamil Nadu recorded a whopping 183 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am on Thursday and 08:30 am on Friday.

The record rainfall has brought the city to a standstill. The city is partially experiencing floods as waterlogging has been reported from several areas.

The unprecedented rainfall has caused panic among the residents as they fear a repeat of the 2015 floods in Tamil Nadu that had created havoc in the city, leading to the death of at least 150 people across the state.

In fact, schools and colleges were closed on Friday as a precautionary measure to avoid any problems to the children. The city's schools and colleges were not functioning since Tuesday due to rains.

The state government has asked the Information Technology (IT) companies to announce holiday for their employees on Friday. Along with Chennai, several coastal areas of the state have been battered by rains since Tuesday.

"Rainfall activity will continue over north coastal Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rain over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chennai districts during the next 24 hours," a special bulletin issued at 8.30 am said on Friday.

According to skymetweather.com, "While there has been a break in Chennai rains during morning hours on Friday, these showers will once again make an appearance during the afternoon and evening hours. Thus, during the next 24 hours, heavy rains will occur in Chennai."

The local administration has issued an advisory to Chennai asking people to stay indoors and venture out only if it is really necessary.

"Fishermen and locals have been advised against venturing out along and off the coastal areas. People living in the low lying areas have been asked by the administration to move to safer places," added skymetweather.com.
