Meghalaya elections 2018: Serious criminal cases against 21; 152 candidates are crorepatis

ADR and Meghalaya Election Watch have analyzed the self-sworn affidavits affidavits of all 370 candidates contesting in the upcoming elections.

Out of the 370, 152 candidates (41 per cent) are crorepatis and 21 (7 per cent) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in affidavits, according to Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Meghalaya Election Watch report released ahead of Meghalaya Assembly Elections.

ADR and Meghalaya Election Watch have analyzed the self-sworn affidavits affidavits of all 370 candidates contesting in the upcoming elections.

  • Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 21 (6%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
    Meghalaya: 152 candidates are crorepatis
  • Candidates with cases related to murder: 1 candidate namely Nikman Ch.Marak, a GNC candidate contesting from Baghmara constituency has declared case related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302) against himself.
  • Candidates with cases related to attempt to murder: 3 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-307) against themselves.
  • Candidates with cases related to crime against women: 3 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women such as rape (IPC Section- 376); word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman (IPC Section -509) and cohabitation caused by man deceitfully including a belief of lawful marriage (IPC Section 493).

About 151 (41 per cent) candidates have declared their educational qualification to be between 5th pass and 12th pass, while 208 (56 per cent) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above.

Asa far as age details of candidates is concerned, 244(66 per cent) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 50 years while 126 (34 per cent) candidates have declared their age to be between 51 and 80 years. 33 (9%) women candidates are contesting in the Meghalaya assembly election, 2018.
