Maternity Leave Bill moved in Lok Sabha

Union Minister for Labour Bandaru Dattatreya on Thursday moved the Maternity Leave Bill in Lok Sabha.

New Delhi: The Central government on Thursday moved maternity leave Bill in Lok Sabha that seeks maternity paid leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed in Rajya Sabha in August 2016, provides maternity benefit from 12 to 26 weeks for two surviving kids and it is also aimed at benefitting around 1.8 million women in the organised sector.

Govt moves Maternity leave Bill

Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya moved the Bill in the lower house. The Bill will be applicable to the establishments hiring 10 or more people. The Bill protects the jobs of women during their maternity period and entitles her full payment in absence from work.

Once the Bill becomes an Act and gets notified, India will take the third place in terms of Maternity leaves after Canada 50 and Norway 44.
