Formalin scare: Goa bans fish imports from states till July end

Panaji, July 18: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday announced a fifteen day ban on import of fish in Goa "in the interest of the people" of the state.

He took on Twitter and wrote: "In the interest of people of Goa, have issued directions to ban the import of fish in Goa for next 15 days. Fishing activity in Goa will resume in the month of August, hence plenty of fresh fish will be available to Goans."

''A formal notification will be issued by evening. The decision has been taken as a measure of abundant caution in the interest of the Goans.

Once the annual ban on fishing in Goa ends on July 31 and fishing officially resumes on August 1, there will be no issue of fish shortage in Goa,'' he said

Formalin, a toxic chemical is used to preserve bodies and prevent decay in mortuaries.
